On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially opened the inaugural section of the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS Corridor, located at the Sahibabad RapidX Station. During this event, he also initiated the RapidX train service, connecting Sahibabad to Duhai Depot, symbolizing the commencement of the Regional Rapid Transit System in India. Additionally, Union minister Hardeep Singh Puri had previously announced that the RRTS trains would be branded as 'Namo Bharat' in a social media post.

The Indian Railways has already introduced semi-high-speed trains, known as 'Vande Bharat,' in various regions of the country.

The German Ambassador to India, Philipp Ackermann, who was present during the launch event, expressed his gratitude, saying, "I am deeply honored to be here today. This is an outstanding project, representing the fastest train in India to date. It's a shuttle train operated by the German rail company Deutsche Bahn, part of the NCRTC, connecting Meerut to Delhi at a speed of 160 km/hr."

A total of eight RRTS corridors have been earmarked for development within the National Capital Region (NCR). Among these, three corridors have been given priority in the Phase I implementation plan. These include the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Corridor, the Delhi-Gurugram-SNB-Alwar Corridor, and the Delhi-Panipat Corridor.

The Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS project, with a total estimated cost exceeding ₹30,000 crore, is set to reduce the travel time between Delhi and Meerut to less than an hour, passing through the urban areas of Ghaziabad, Muradnagar, and Modinagar.

Designed to reach speeds of up to 180 kilometers per hour, the RRTS will offer high-speed intercity train services at intervals as short as 15 minutes, with the flexibility to increase the frequency to as little as every 5 minutes, as stated in an official government announcement.

The foundation stone for the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut corridor was ceremoniously placed by Prime Minister Modi on March 8, 2019.
